Session 4 – Time: 2:45 PM – 3:45 PM
Everyone knows gardening is good for the soul, yet disabilities due to illness, accidents, or simply aging can make it more difficult for the body. Learn from two experienced ‘ability’ gardeners about adaptations like raised beds and more ergonomic tools that can make gardening easier for people with limited strength and mobility.
Valerie Denesiuk is a member of, among others, the East Kildonan Garden Club, the Manitoba Regional Lily Society, and the Millennium Gardens, a community garden for seniors (55+). She is the creator of a popular e-mail newsletter about regional gardening events. Before retirement, she was active in human rights and disability accommodation.
Eleanor Stelmack is an occupational therapist with the Healthy Aging Resource Team (HART) in River East-Transcona. A strong believer in the benefits of gardening and keen to help everyone continue to engage in the activities they love, she helped found the Millennium Gardens for seniors in North Kildonan and remains involved with the Beautify Elmwood Committee.
